How can you be true to your heart, once you realize that the heart is deceitful above all things?

You may have heard the phrase at some point in your life... ';just follow your heart';....or ';just be true to your heart';....or ';what does your heart tell you'; ?

But once we realize that it may not be a good idea to follow the very thing that is deceitful above all things, what are we to do ?

';The heart is deceitful above all things , and desperately wicked: who can know it?';

Jeremiah 17:9

Is this why we were unable to FIND out that we were LOST ?

What does Jesus really mean when He says....'; If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remains.'; John 9:41

If deception and the power of darkness causes us to see in the 'light' and 'reasoning' of a deceitful heart, what is able to give us a SINGLE eye and make us full of Light again ?

Luke 11:34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.

';That was the true Light, which lights EVERY MAN that comes into the world.'; John 1:9

Bonus Q: Does this reference to the EYE being SINGLE have anything to do with this passage below ?.

';His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of waters, washed with milk, and fitly set.';

Song of Solomon 5:12

Just a thought..... but nevertheless ';Here's milk in your eye'; ! ; )

Interestingly, the word for ';FITLY SET'; is מִלֵּאת (millē'ṯ)

1.) FULNESS, setting, border, rim

1.a.) meaning dubious

Etymology: from H4390 which is = מָלָא מָלֵא (mālā' mālē')

1.) to fill, be full

1.a.) (Qal)

1.a1.) to be full

1.a1a.) fulness, abundance (participle)

1.a1b.) to be full, be accomplished, be ended

1.a2.) to consecrate, fill the hand

1.b.) (Niphal)

1.b1.) to be filled, be armed, be satisfied

Doncha just love the dubiousness of it all : ) ?

Have a Onederfully Single~Eyed DAY dearly beloved : )How can you be true to your heart, once you realize that the heart is deceitful above all things?
Well, I'll tell you this much, taking your heart out of your body is not a good plan, so yeah. How can you be true to your heart, once you realize that the heart is deceitful above all things?
heart just beats thats its job..
Ooooooh looks like you discovered the contradictions of life.

It's a choice. Choose to be true to your heart, choose to have a heart that is true. Make the change.
Science has shown that your gut feeling is almost always right, and the second guess is almost always wrong (especially when you begin to rationalize).

While I can't find the article now, the subconscious has often made a decision before the brain has finished processing all the factors in the question. This is why those 'say the first thing that comes to your head' games/tests exist, and also the root of 'follow your heart', as your first instinct is always right.
I will give you a simple answer to your long discussion...simply this - Each moment of life, is the opportunity, to do something different. Each moment is a NEW chance to change, to express yourself in a different manner, to be someone NEW. No matter what you have said or done in the past, you can choose to be a different person right NOW. That means, that the past is meaningless. Let the past go and forget about it. Don't live in the past. Live in the present moment. Live NOW. It serves no purpose to recriminate the self.
Ooooo Seth, I'm afraid I have to disagree a bit with that thought process. If your heart is ';true to God'; and you live within God's grace and limitations that he provides, how can one go wrong. I try to make every decision with God's Laws in mind and heart.....I will agree that when we leave God's commands/Laws we may sway and lose sight of God for a bit, but with time , age and patience, it becomes easier ....especially with age !
If i can say: I believe that saying is about following the desires of our hearts - you know the ones that God planned to plant in us when He saw our unformed body :))

He thought of Seth and planned to sew a seed for a particular dream ~ He thought of Sarah (that's me lol) and thought He would sew a seed for a particular dream in me :)

Psalm 37:4 AMP

Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of the heart.

I get your meaning tho - - when we have the Holy Spirit living in us, we know when our heart isn't right - isn't it wonderful that we have the choice to ask Him to change it..

bless you :)
salaams seth...

The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful,

a puzzle that no one can figure out.

But God searches the heart

and examines the mind.

He gets to the heart of the human.

God gets to the root of things.

He treats them as they really are,

not as they pretend to be.';

God gave the hope for all humans.

Even though he saw our heart %26amp; it's desires,

He sent his son to earth, gave himself as a perfect sacrifice for our hopelessly deceitful and disobedient heart. He died and rose again, giving us new life for our dark hearts. As we believe in Jesus as God's atonement for our sin, we can be made clean... just as if I'd never sinned at all. A clean heart! When a person believes on the Lord Jesus Christ, God the Holy Spirit lives in us, making us long to be whom God wants us to be.
Great Question Seth!

Man seems to never learn that God places certain responsibilities on man and God himself will not perform these matters for man to the point that man is excluded.

';Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life'; Prov. 4: 23.

From this inspired command, we learn several truths. First, man must keep his own heart. Man must also keep his heart ';diligently.'; Moreover, out of the heart flow all the issues of life. The Bible speaks of a people ';that set not their heart aright'; Ps. 78: 8.

God, though, will assist as man seeks to prepare and keep his heart Ps. 10: 17; 51: 10, (Ezra 7: 10).

The word of God is said to be ';a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart'; Heb. 4: 12.

Jesus is presented as ';he which searcheth the reins and hearts'; Rev. 2: 20-23.

Hence, God knows our will, our emotions, intellect, and conscience. All things are laid open.

to him who shall be the righteous judge of all men 2 Cor. 5: 10

The residence of God's law in our hearts suggests our minds, emotions, will, and conscience are all involved in the matter of God's laws.

Our speech mirrors our heart. Jesus asked some of the Pharisees, ';O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh'; Matt. 12: 35. Many times we hear it said that ';he does have corrupt speech but his heart is good'; Eph. 4: 29. Jesus says one cannot have bad speech and a good heart. Corrupt speech is indicative of a corrupt heart.

Bonus Q: Does this reference to the EYE being SINGLE have anything to do with this passage below ?

Yes...... The minds eye never blinks! God can see all things and never blinks!
